Maker and Taker Fees

A taker order occurs when you execute a trade immediately against an existing order in the order book.
This type of trade incurs a taker fee.

A maker order, on the other hand, is created when you place an order that doesn’t execute right away — it stays in the order book until it’s matched with another order, as is common with limit orders.
These orders are subject to the maker fee and help increase market liquidity by adding more options to the order book.

In contrast, taker orders reduce liquidity because they execute against existing orders, decreasing market depth.

To encourage liquidity providers, maker fees are usually lower than taker fees.
